Versions of Office 2019

Versions of Office 2019

With Microsoft Office 2019 set to be released later this year, it is important to begin considering which version will be right for your needs. With so many options to choose from, this can be a daunting task.

While everyone would like a cheap Office 2019 version, getting an affordable Office suite and having all the right programs and features is key.

PC vs. Mac

The first choice to make when considering your Office 2019 purchase is whether you need the suite for a PC, a Mac, or both. To begin with, Office 2019 will be available for both PCs and Macs. The main difference will be that some perpetual versions are only available for PC and some programs are exclusive to PC (namely, Publisher and Access).

An important point to make here is that most Office 365 subscriptions come with multiple installations, meaning Office 2019 could be installed on all your PCs and all your Macs.

Office 2019 Perpetual vs. Office 365

After deciding whether to get Office 2019 for PC, Mac, or both, the next choice is to decide between a traditional perpetual license (which can be installed on one computer and remains there forever) or an Office 365 license.

The Office 365 license, as mentioned above, often comes with the ability to install on multiple computers. It also comes with 1 TB of cloud storage and free upgrades to the latest editions (at this time, Office 2019, but later upgrades will also be included). Most Office 365 suites also include all of the Office programs, instead of a limited number as in many perpetual suites. The catch is that Office 365 requires a regular fee, paid either monthly or yearly.

Office 2019 Perpetual and Office 365 will both be viable options for the new Office suite, but they will include different suites with different features.

32-bit vs. 64-bit

Another crucial decision when purchasing your future copy of Office 2019 will be whether you want to use the 32-bit or 64-bit version.

Office 64-bit downloads will be available and are recommended for those who use large data sets or work with extremely large pictures or animations in programs like PowerPoint. It can also be useful for those who develop in-house Office programming solutions.

Essentially, for very heavy-duty usage of the Office suite that requires a lot of upfront memory and computing power, use an Office 2019 64-bits download. Otherwise, 32-bit is recommended (and comes as the default).

Home Versions

Finally, getting to the actual versions that users can expect to see when Office 2019 is released, it is useful to divide the program suites into categories: home versions and business versions. The perpetual home versions will likely include:

  • Home & Student for PC—The core programs for Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

  • Home & Student for Mac—The same core applications.

The Office 365 versions that will allow for a free 2019 upgrade include:

  • Personal—The core programs, plus Outlook, and (on PC) Publisher and Access. For one computer installation.

  • Home—The same as Personal but for up to 5 users and 5 installations. Basically, it is a Microsoft home and office 2019 family pack.

Business Versions

Business offers even more options for Office users. The perpetual business will likely include:

  • Home & Business for PC—The core programs (listed above), plus Outlook.

  • Home & Business for Mac—The core programs, plus Outlook.

  • Standard for PC—Available only for volume licensing at businesses. Includes the core programs, Outlook, and Publisher.

  • Standard for Mac—Available only for volume licensing at businesses. Includes the core programs and Outlook (note the lack of Publisher).

  • Professional for PC—Includes the core programs, Outlook, Publisher, and Access.

  • Professional Plus for PC—Available only for volume licensing at businesses. Includes the core programs, Outlook, Publisher, Access, and Skype for Business.

  • Office 365 for business has a large number of options for business, all of which will be able to upgrade to Office 2019 when it is released. The most popular Office 365 versions include
Business—The same programs and features found in the Home version described above, only with a business focus.

  • Business Essentials—A suite of online communication programs with only online Office core programs.

  • Business Premium—A combination of the Business and Business Essentials suites.

  • Professional Plus—A volume license version of the Business suite.

  • Enterprise E3—A volume license version of Office 365, with increased security and Skype for Business.

  • Enterprise E5—A volume license version of Office 365, with all the features of E3, plus business analytics.

When Does Office 2019 Get Released?

There is no official release date for Office 2019 yet, although Microsoft has said it will be in the second half of 2018.

However, there will be an early chance to use the new programs with all their new features. A Microsoft Office 2019 Beta release of the programs are scheduled for the second quarter of the year, which means sometime in the spring or early summer.
