Fix Discord Not Opening
Let’s see how to fix the Discord not opening issue on Windows 10.
Method 1. Terminate the Discord process
One common fix for Discord, not opening is simply terminating all Discord processes first, then reopening the application. In some cases, you might’ve launched multiple instances of Discord, which causes serious conflicts and prevents the application from properly opening up.
- Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard. This is going to bring up the Run utility.
- Type in “cmd” without the quotation marks and press the Enter key on your keyboard. This will launch the classic Command Prompt application.
- Paste in the following command and press the Enter key to execute it: taskkill /f /im discord.exe
- Restart your computer, and try launching Discord. Check if the application opens and works properly now.
Method 2. Clear your AppData and LocalAppData folders
Windows stores cache files in the AppData folder. If your system is running out of storage to store Discord’s necessary cache, you should definitely clear this folder out and make space for Discord’s files.
- Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard. This is going to bring up the Run utility.
- Type in “%appdata%” and click on the OK button. This will immediately redirect you to the AppData folder in File Explorer.
- Locate the Discord folder, then right-click on it and choose Delete.
- Restart your computer and see if you can open up Discord.
- If the method wasn’t successful, repeat the process to clear the LocalAppData folder by typing %localappdata% instead of %appdata% in Step 2.
Method 3. Fix your Windows time and date
More often than not, a simple setting change can cause Discord to not open properly. The date and time on your device is one of these settings.
- Open the Settings app by using the Windows + I keyboard shortcut. You can also reach this from the Start menu by clicking on the gear icon.
- A new window should open. Here, select the Time & Language tab, then choose Date & Time from the sidebar menu.
- Turn these two options on:
- Set time automatically
- Select time zone automatically
- Next, choose Region & language from the same panel. Under Country or region, select the place you’re currently located in. This will automatically set your time and date correctly, as long as you’re connected to the internet when the change is made.
- Restart your computer and try opening Discord again.
Method 4. Use the web version of Discord
In rare cases, the issue causing Discord to not open is your login. Many errors can come up during the login process, which causes Discord to enter a timeout loop and not load properly. To stop this from happening, you can attempt to use the web version of Discord, then reopen the instance installed on your device.
- Open any web browser installed on your computer.
- In the address bar, type in https://discord.com and navigate to the official Discord website by pressing Enter.
- Click on the Open Discord in your browser button.
- If you already have an account, click on the Login button in the top-right of the page. Otherwise, you can register by following the on-screen instructions and entering a username.
- Enter your login credentials and click on the Login button.
- After successfully logging in through the web, try reopening Discord on your computer.
Method 5. Flush your DNS
If your DNS is outdated, you can manually clear its cache to potentially fix the issues this causes. The method is simple and involves using the Command Prompt. Keep it in mind that you might be required to use an administrator account to perform this method.
- Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard. This is going to bring up the Run utility.
- Type in “cmd” without the quotation marks and press the Enter key on your keyboard. This will launch the classic Command Prompt application.
- Paste in the following command and press the Enter key to execute it: ipconfig /flushdns
- Close the Command Prompt and check if Discord is opening up properly.
Method 6. Uninstall and reinstall Discord
If none of the above methods work, you may want to try manually applying a Discord update, or simply reinstalling the application.
You can download it by navigating to the Download Discord page in your browser, and choosing the appropriate version for your system.
